Dogwood Charter School
Building a brand for lifelong learners.
Scope: Brand Strategy · Brand Development · Messaging · Enrollment Marketing · Digital Strategy
The Challenge 🤨
When I joined Dogwood's founding team, the school was still working toward approval. There was a logo and an educational vision, but no website, established visual system, or marketing presence.
The challenge was less about starting with a blank canvas and more about bringing structure to a brand that was still taking shape, turning that early vision into something families could see, understand, and connect with.
My Role 🧠
I helped establish Dogwood's brand and marketing foundation from the ground up, developing the brand guide, visual standards, messaging approach, website, enrollment communications, and tech stack.
A big part of my role was translating. Taking lengthy charter documents, educational language, and feature-heavy messaging and turning them into clear, approachable communications for families.
I continue to consult on messaging and brand direction as the school grows.
The Insight 💡
“Charlotte Mason-inspired” doesn't mean much if you've never heard of Charlotte Mason.
Dogwood had a distinct educational philosophy, but the terminology used to describe it wasn't necessarily meaningful to families encountering it for the first time.
So instead of asking families to understand the philosophy before they understood the school, I focused on showing them what it actually looks and feels like in practice.
That meant turning pedagogy into plain-language stories, experiences, and benefits families could picture for their own children, without losing the heart of what makes the approach different.
The Strategy ♟️
Make the unfamiliar feel familiar.
Rather than relying on “Charlotte Mason-inspired” to explain what makes Dogwood different, I translated the pedagogy into everyday experiences families could picture.
That meant taking long, formal explanations and turning them into clear, approachable messaging that showed—not just told—families what learning at Dogwood could look and feel like.
I also created a brand guide and messaging guardrails to bring consistency to how Dogwood communicates across its growing marketing presence, while leaving room for the brand to evolve alongside the school.
From “What is Charlotte Mason?” to “Oh, I can see my child here.”
The Execution 🎨
A brand system built to grow with the school. I translated Dogwood's educational philosophy into a flexible visual and messaging system that could work across the school's growing digital presence and enrollment communications.
Social Media
Turning educational concepts into approachable, relatable content that families could understand and connect with.
Brand Identity
A visual foundation that brought Dogwood's educational philosophy to life and gave the growing school a recognizable identity.
Visual System
A flexible brand palette, typography, and guidelines designed to keep the brand cohesive as Dogwood grew.
The Result 📈
From Idea to Identity
Dogwood launched with a clear, recognizable brand and messaging that helped families understand what made the school different—and generated strong early interest and enrollment.
The brand continues to provide a foundation for how Dogwood communicates with families as the school grows.
